Scientists theorize that this, the largest North American bird of prey, will become extinct in spite of humans. Large. dead mammals are just not part of California's scenery any longer.

* I love the fact that you can just make out the outline of the beak underneath the "hand puppet" skin of the face.

Every corpse-eating raptor has it's day, that's what I always say.
Ok, I've never said that.
Of course, we as humans have helped hasten the extinction process, charitably leaving toxic little puddles of radiator coolant in the parking lots of National Parks.:(
